Summary
Marcellus Hall's vibrant illustrations can be found throughout well-known periodicals and books including The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Time, and The Cow Loves Cookies (Simon & Schuster 2010). Also an indie musician with his bands Railroad Jerk, White Hassle, and his solo project, he starts his career in New York City and falls deeply in love with it, intoxicated by its never-ending inspirations and possibilities. He’s recorded the city as well as the ups and downs of his personal life for years through his artwork and music, which are featured seamlessly throughout episodes. This short documentary series documents his creative journey from being seven-years-old drawing pictures to a successful working artist, and all the stages in between.

1 • The Early Years
1 • Since he was a kid, drawing has helped Marcellus make sense of the world. Fresh out of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with little besides his sketchpad and harmonica, Marcellus Hall sets off to travel across the U.S., often by hitchhiking. Fueled by romance and a hunger for adventure, he starts finding his stride as an illustrator and musician.
2 • The First Years in New York
2 • Marcellus Hall starts his life in the gritty and magical metropolis of New York City. It's the absolute best and worst that he ever could have imagined, and he's elated to be there. He experiments with his drawing style, and helps deal with heartbreak by starting a new band, Railroad Jerk.
3 • The Railroad Jerk Years
Marcellus Hall carves out his niche as an artist and musician in New York City and has his day in the sun with his most popular albums with his band Railroad Jerk.
3 • Marcellus Hall starts a comic strip and begins getting hired by bigger magazines, leading him to leave his day job and start freelancing. As his illustration work becomes more corporate, he delves deeper into making indie music. His band Railroad Jerk goes on national and international tours.
4 • The White Hassle Years
4 • Marcellus Hall starts a new band called White Hassle with his drummer from Railroad Jerk, marking a progression in his musical style and gaining him new fans, including Isaac Brock, the lead singer from Modest Mouse. He achieves a career milestone with a cover of The New Yorker and starts facing imposter syndrome. Meanwhile, he experiences the New York City dating scene.
5 • The Solo Years
5 • Marcellus Hall enters a new phase as an artist and finds one of the keys to longevity is experimenting stylistically. He opens himself to a new medium and starts a solo music project which is heavily influenced by his bittersweet love life.
